Tips for Creating the Best Floorplan Image

To make your floorplan view as effective as possible, follow these optional tips for creating an optimal image file:

1. Keep It Clean

Avoid unnecessary text or lines in your floorplan. The most useful floorplans only show essential elements such as walls, doors, and furniture. If you're using a CAD file, ask the designer for a simplified version without the following elements:

  • Text labels (including room names, which Ordinate will add automatically)
  • Measurement lines
  • Ceiling structures, power points, or cabling

2. Trim and Orient the Image

  • Trim the Margins: Remove any unnecessary margins so that the image fills the display frame as much as possible.
  • Crop for Clarity: If only part of the floorplan is relevant, consider cropping to that area. However, ensure it still provides enough context for users to understand the layout.
  • Landscape Orientation: Floorplans typically display best in a landscape orientation, ensuring maximum visibility for users.

3. Add Transparency

For a polished look, make areas inside meeting spaces transparent. This enables Ordinate to fill each space with a background colour that indicates availability. Your CAD designer may be able to output with transparency, or use image editing software - a 'flood fill' tool is particularly useful if your rooms are enclosed by sealed lines.

4. Save in the Right Format

We recommend saving your floorplan as a PNG file, which supports transparency and provides high image quality. GIF is also acceptable if PNG is not available.
